Founder & Director – John Lucas Gospel Choir
John Lucas is a Jamaican-born gospel singer, songwriter, and choir director who has become one of the most influential figures in Japan’s gospel music community. Having lived and worked in Japan for over two decades, he has dedicated his life to spreading the message, power, and joy of gospel music through performance, education, and community building.
John began his gospel journey at a young age and went on to gain international recognition as a dynamic vocalist and passionate worship leader. After relocating to Japan, he quickly established himself as a pioneer in the country’s modern gospel movement, introducing authentic gospel sound, spirit, and choir culture to audiences nationwide.
He is the founder and director of the John Lucas Gospel Choir, also known through his wider network as JLGospelFamily—a nationwide gospel community made up of choirs, classes, and singers across multiple regions of Japan. What began as a small group has grown into a powerful musical family spanning approximately ten regions, uniting people of all backgrounds through song, faith, and shared purpose.
Beyond the stage, John is deeply committed to education and mentorship. He regularly leads gospel workshops, choir training programs, and vocal classes, nurturing both musical skill and spiritual expression. His teaching emphasizes unity, discipline, emotional authenticity, and the communal roots of gospel music.
John Lucas has performed extensively across Japan and internationally, appearing at concerts, festivals, churches, and special events. His work has also been featured on Japanese television and media, earning him recognition as a cultural bridge between gospel’s Black American and Caribbean origins and Japan’s vibrant music scene.
In recent years, John has led major projects such as the JLGospelFamily 25th Anniversary, celebrating decades of gospel activity in Japan through concerts, recordings, and nationwide collaborations. His mission remains clear: to use gospel music as a tool for hope, healing, and human connection.
